The programmes in this department are geared towards producing innovative, creative and flexible graduates who will cope with the dynamic changes of technology and socio-economic needs. To enhance this philosophy the programme is designed and developed such that it:

  Provides a sound progression in medical sciences and develops ability in communication and entrepreneurial skills so as to give the graduates an opportunity for further training

  Allows for development of skilled and professional career education with a strong base in clinical medicine and other allied health disciplines

  Offers a wide base of inter-disciplinary aspects in the fields of health with a significant link in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)

  Enhances graduates awareness towards professional, legal and socio-economic influences in the delivery of health care services

  Enables graduates to be self-confident and acquire competences that solve day-to-day problems

  Satisfies the specified standards in line with the National Technical Awards system; and

  Imparts creativeness and strong ability for the graduates to undertake given tasks competently.

It is, therefore, expected that the graduates from this programme will have aspirations to become full professionals. The programme is a modular system and will operate under semester structure. This will facilitate a large degree of flexibility for the graduates future development.

The programme aims to achieve the following goals:

  To form a flexible course that is responsive to dynamic and rapidly changing world of work and the society

  To provide the skills, knowledge and behaviours that are vital to the stakeholders and specifically to the employers and the community

  To entice self-realization and team work skills that enable graduates to be employable and team players

  To build capacity to facilitate the implementation of National Health Policy and its accompanying Operational Guidelines linked to global initiatives; and

  To propagate and promote moral, legal, ethical conduct and professionalism among health workers within the national legal framework and practice.

Medical Laboratory science is an art and science of investigation and diagnosis, therefore:

  The accessibility to the hieghest attainable standards of health laboratory services in fundamental right of human being irrespective of gender, age, race, religion, socio-cultural differences, political affiliation, economic or social background;

  The practice of medical laboratory is humanitarian in nature and requires knowledge, skills and attitudes in respect of compassion, respect and empathy. Ethical and legal consideration in the provision of care;

  Environment influences individuals, families and community at large. Therefore a laboratory personnel must acknowledge the different interaction patterns in the environment and impact in interaction to health and illness;

  Education is a continous process that embraces new technology and community demands; therefore a laboratory personnel shall keep abreast with current health development to render quality cost-effective services;

  The learner is a unique individual with past experiences and needs, which should be respected. S/he has the responsibility for his/her own learning and self development through active participation; and

  Collaboration is necessary for effective actions to occur. Training institutions shall maintain teamwork spirit at all levels of training environment.

The programme aims at producing a person who will provide community based health, social welfare and facility health services to individuals, families, and communities at community level and/or health facility; based on their needs.

Students who will study the Basic Technical Certificate in Community Health, after completion of NTA Level 4 course; the graduate will have opportunity ti channel to other various programs. This is after attaining the prescribed minimum entry. Programmes that are considered open for a successful Community Health graduate to join, as described in their curriculum, include the following (BUT not limited to these):
